TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less).

Objectives

Creating Ukrainian subtitle for a TED-talk “Txtng is killing language. JK!!!” by John McWhorter (linguistics).

Solutions

1. Caught the peculiarities of the presenter’s speech style
2. Translated the transcript of the talk in accordance with the community guidelines.
3. Altered the ready translation to suit the subtitling criteria: Sentences have been split into pieces of a certain length to fit the speech tempo of the author, but also to cover the scope of what was said in that particular span of time while also fitting in the provided subtitling space.
4. Proofread before submitting to the chief editor of the Ukrainian subtitling division.
